Business Continuity Management

Planning for the unexpected to create a competitive advantage

Faced with rising exposure to new risks and declining tolerance for disruptions to operations, leading organizations are evaluating their capabilities to respond to crises and mitigate future risk. These
leaders embrace the moral imperative to protect their people and understand that the ability to continuously perform and satisfy customers and investors is fundamental to sustaining competitive
advantage in the twenty-first century.

In this environment, preparing for disaster must become an integral part of a larger risk management program. An effective Business
Continuity strategy takes into account the totality of risk, provides sustainability of operations, ensures the welfare of people
and balances the cost of risk management with the opportunity cost of not taking appropriate action.

Our client focused approach
KPMG is helping organizations to understand and implement effective business continuity capabilities. We work with our clients to develop, implement and test recovery and continuity arrangements. We aim to provide organizations with an established
capability to recover and maintain operations whatever the event, through the design and implementation of resilient and rapid recovery strategies for critical business services.

Issues addressed:

  • Risk assessment
  • Capability assessment
  • Business continuity and disaster recovery
    strategy design
  • Sourcing of recovery facilities and technologies, whether in-house or externally
  • Crisis management, emergency response and incident management frameworks
  • Project management for design and implementation of workspace recovery
  • Business continuity test, exercise and training programs
  • Development of business continuity policies, procedures, invocation and emergency plans and quality assurance procedures.

KPMG’s Business Continuity Management (BCM) approach helps clients develop a strategy for managing business continuity.
Our approach is depicted in an ongoing “life cycle” encompassing four phases aligned with the organization’s business strategy. This
life cycle approach enables risk management, and helps enable an organization’s evolution from reacting to a disaster, to responding in a controlled manner by implementing high availability solutions for critical business operations. The risk mitigating approach helps ensure reliability of the organization irrespective of the type of event.

    Risk and Service Level Profiling
Achieving effective business continuity starts with assessing organizational risks and requirements for managing them in the
future. We help you to understand how your organization relies on its people, processes and technology as well as its relationships with customers, suppliers and other contributors to your organization’s
information and physical supply chain. This knowledge will help enable you to evaluate tolerance for downtime in order to determine
the requirements for an effective business continuity strategy.

    Solutions Architecture
We help you to define a strategy that integrates business continuity into the fabric of your risk management program. This strategy focuses on the complementary elements of monitoring, mitigating, and responding to risk. These issues will encompass people, processes, technology, and, increasingly, the interdependence of
    organizations.

    Implementation Management
During this phase we support your organization in the process of making the strategy a reality. Together, we develop a structured program to apply risk management standards, tackle cultural issues, and improve technology and processes.

    Risk and Service Level Monitoring
As tolerance for downtime diminishes, your organization must be able to measure risks and performance and monitor both in
real time. We support you during the process of making these efforts by being part of an ongoing continuous improvement effort –
one in which the organization maintains an adequate risk posture and improves the effectiveness of its risk
